About the Lectionary Cycle

  • The Lectionary is a collection of readings from the Bible used in the Liturgy of the Word at Mass.
  • ​There is a two-year cycle of readings for weekday masses and a three-year cycle of readings for Sunday Masses, labeled A, B, and C.
  • In addition to the Sunday and weekday cycles, the Lectionary provides readings for feasts of the saints, common celebrations such as Marian feasts, ritual masses (weddings, funerals, etc.), votive masses, and various needs. 
  • ​Food for the Soul covers the Sunday readings and many major liturgical celebrations and feast days.
  • ​​The Lectionary Cycle begins, not on January 1, but on the First Sunday of Advent (usually late November or early December), which is the beginning of the liturgical year.
  • The past two years were Cycle C and Cycle A. Cycle B will begin on December 3, 2023 and continue through November 30, 2024.
  • ​This cycle repeats every three years, so one of the three volumes of Food for the Soul will always be relevant to the Sunday Mass readings.
  • ​The first reading, usually from the Old Testament, reflects important themes from the Gospel reading.
  • The second reading is usually from one of the New Testament epistles.
